  • Minority Report - Porcupine (25/06/2002 1:15:12 AM)
I saw the shorts of this and straight away knew I wanted to see it. I wasn't alone - I had three invites to see it with various people. Mischance messed the first two sessions, but finally I get a viewing on the last.

Tom Cruise stars in this flick as the chief of pre-crime, and does and damned good job of it. The last movie of his I saw was Mission Impossible 2 which is a tragic waste of celluloid and a violation of the "MI" name. TC has hits and misses with his roles. This one is a hit.

There is a good load of special effects in this movie, sometimes they are played up a little too much but nowhere near the level of Star Wars Ep2. The director goes way more for symbols here. The theme to the movie is all about seeing and we are shown eyes; eyes cut out of a paper face, eyes poked out, eyes open unseeing, eyes bandaged up, eyes in a bag etc. Oh, and a hug of the chief and the precog to look like a Janus effigy was a wonderful esoteric touch.

A murder mystery where the murder hasn't yet taken place. Who's gonna do it? The post movie discussion we had brought up some good points like life imprisonment for "crimes of passion" doesn't sound very fair. Finding a flaw should make an almost perfect system better ~ once you figure out how to fix it, not really a reason for dismantling it. The precogs end up being pretty selfish if you ask me. The needs of the many ... bah. Was the chief's outing really premeditated, how the precog see it so far in advance otherwise? What resolution do your thoughts come in?

A flawed hero, a villain who's good, a goodie who's bad, some neat twists - ya, a great story line. A typical Hollywood ending lessens the movie a good deal, but not so much as I cared as the journey was great. I highly recommend "Minority Report".

    Where was I?
How come I have not yet been to see this film.
I know - everyone hates me because I am just to cool.

man.... 3 invites?!?! talk yourself up a bit more FABIO!
Re: Minority Report - Morte (4/07/2002 10:01:10 AM)
NOTE! possible spoilers within, for those who haven't seen it yet...

It was ok. The hero didn't show much consistency with his dependancy (flaw). Perhaps he just needed something to keep him busy? Perhaps his flaw was flawed? Perhaps there was a lack of continuity? Perhaps wood balls in lacquer is a lame idea? Given the technology to mill the wood into spheres, I hold no illusions that the precise same woodgrain couldn't also be replicated, introducing fraud. (Or practical jokes in the workplace) - HA HA! John! You're convicted of pre-crime! Look at this perpetrator ball with your name on it! HA! HA! Just KIDDING!
Perhaps I am a bastardly nit picker?
Perhaps, but I never even thought these things until just now when I re-read your review after having seen it [the movie] myself.
A dirty person would ask what the 'twins' are going to do to while away the time together at the end, but there you go.
And HELLO People, if it was so difficult to develop the pre-cogs in the first place (they were created by pure chance, and were supposedly the only surviving pre-cognitive subjects from the original group, HOW THE FUDGE IS THE PRE-CRIME SYSTEM GOING TO GO NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL? Are those three going to cope with the incoming collective unconscious of the entire nation/planet?
Wait! What am I saying? How the fudge were they BLOCKING the pre-cognition of events outside the city?
    Too many basic flaws.

Ooh, ooh, I almost forgot, Mr Cruise did a brilliant job purely because his limited character range fitted so well with the 'intense over-achiever' protagonist.

The one technique I found interesting was the use and manipulation of pre-cog imagery. They were lucky they only got the images from them, imagine other sensate transmissions....
That manipulation was interesting mainly because that is how several groups of psychic mediums do process images that come to them. But in this case, instead of the mediums being vegetables, with their precognition stored and manipulated by artificial means, they essentially work with that intuitive matching and instant answer themselves, fully cognizant both of realtime, and of events in other time.
OK, that's enough for now, time to go.

Dude, you are being way too picky. Its a new drug, is it addictive or purely escapist ~ can't tell, not enough information so we go with what we are given and accept it. Their lamo unique ball theory is good enough. Everyone sees the damn thing coming down the plastic tubing anyways. Maybe the cop made it up just to sound good. It is all strange-tech so we don't have a basis to work on and therefore must accept what they give us, and move on. Same with the distance thing. Who knows why, we aren't told, its not based on any fact we have now, so picking on shortfalls would also be based on your interpretation of what the facts might be.

"Too many basic flaws"?! If you aren't going to enjoy stuff with inaccuracies in it then you better avoid nearly everything they show on the big screen and go watch discovery channel.
