Half Past Dead - Ninja (24/02/2003 7:26:22 AM) |
This movie shoulda been called DOA.
I usually like to write an expansive post regarding a movie that I have just seen so that everyone can get a well-rounded view on the movie. I won't do that with this one as quite frankly, it isn't worth the time.
PLEASE DON'T EVER SEE THIS MOVIE. It sucks. The worst thing about the movie? The length. Almost 2 hours of pure boredom. One wonders how a martial arts movie actor (heh yeah right) can make a movie with bugger all martial arts in the whole movie?!
I hope no one else wastes any money or time on this movie. Stephen Segal you have a lot to answer for! |

being a sucker for action movies - i went and saw this one.
i really enjoyed it, i don't give a fuck what u think.
its not supposed to be taken SERIOUSLY as a movie about the exaction of the American Justice System.... if it was.. then it would have been a lot more ridiculous than that. it had stunts, smart-ass remarks and a plot line in there too....and it will make alot more money than some other shit movies out there.
so yeah = TWO THUMBS UP - WAS A FUCKEN FUNNY MOVIE.

I didn't ever say that I wanted a serious movie. I actually like Steven Segal movies. That is why I went to see it. I certainly don't expect to witness excellent acting or a gripping plot line. Not that it was ever original. A cop goes undercover in a prison (I have seen at least 20 movies with this slant) and a team breaks in to obtain money but then Segal fights back. That is hardly an original plot line although there is a certain comfort factor in familiarity. The things I didn't like about this movie: Segal is a practitioner of Aikido and is quite good at making it look great on the big screen. He does very little Aikido in the film and actually looks like he has very little fighting skills save 2 fights that he actually doens't use his firearm. I find that strangely insulting from a martial arts perspective since he built up his reputation on Aikido and then resorts to common action movie scenes with lots of gun fire.
Yes it is an action film however I went there to see what he does in most of his movies - good martial arts scenes. It lacked heavily on this point.
Even the morality and spirituality conversation with the prisoner who was set to be executed was tentatively explored however not fleshed out enough and I feel that if you are going to start a topic then flesh it out enough to do it justice.
I didn't even expect the movie to be a critique of the American Justice System. I didn't and have never said that I expected a serious movie however what I did expect (a good martial arts action film) wasn't what I received for my money.
Think about some of Segal's good movies - Under Seige 1, Marked for Death, On Deadly ground and Above the law were great action films, funny one liners and no attempt at a moral theme save perhaps On Deadly ground which has an evironmental theme.
